Founding Mobile Engineer - React Native (Contract & FT)

Vera Health is a fast-growing, early-stage health tech startup building the future of real-time patient experiences. We're looking for a sharp React Native Engineer to join us immediately on a contract-to-hire basis.

This is a high-impact role. You will work directly with our founding team to design, build, and ship critical features for our flagship mobile app (built on React Native, Expo, and TypeScript). We need someone who thrives on ownership, loves solving complex UI/UX challenges, and is passionate about performance. In our lean team, your work will be visible from day one.

What You'll Do

• Build & Ship: Develop, optimize, and maintain core features in our React Native & Expo app for both iOS and Android.
• Master Real-Time UI: Enhance and optimize our core real-time markdown event stream, ensuring "buttery-smooth" performance and a highly interactive user experience.
• Own the Mobile Stack: Take full ownership of features, from consuming REST APIs and handling data flow to implementing pixel-perfect UI.
• Drive Mobile UX: Go beyond the ticket. Proactively identify and advocate for improvements in UI, UX, and app performance to delight our users.
• Collaborate & Iterate: Work closely with the founding team on feature design, architecture decisions, and ensuring app quality.

Qualifications & You

Required Experience:

• 1-5 years of professional mobile development experience using React Native and Expo.
• Strong command of TypeScript and modern React practices (Hooks, Context, etc.).
• Proven experience shipping and maintaining production-level features for both iOS and Android.
• Crucial: Hands-on experience with real-time or event-stream data in a mobile UI (e.g., live chat, data feeds, or markdown streams).
• Solid understanding of REST APIs and mobile application architecture.

Our interview process is designed to find a product-minded Mobile Engineer who thrives on ownership, iterates & ships quickly, and enjoys working with autonomy. It’s designed to be practical, fast, and directly relevant to the work you'll be doing: building high-performance, real-time mobile experiences with React Native and Expo.

To move quickly and focus on practical skills, we replace a generic "phone screen" with a short technical assessment. This allows us to quickly identify the most motivated and skilled engineers and focus our time on your code and your product-building mindset.

Our entire process is designed to be completed in less than two weeks from the moment you receive the assessment.

Step 1: Application Review & Technical Assessment

After you submit your application, our team will conduct a brief review. Candidates who appear to be a strong match for the role will be invited via email to our first interview step: a take-home technical assessment.

This is a small, self-paced project that directly reflects the challenges we're solving.

Step 2: Technical Review & Code Walkthrough

If your submission is a good fit, we will schedule a 45-60 minute technical review call with our Founding Engineer.

This is not a new test or a whiteboarding puzzle. The entire call will be a collaborative review of the project you just submitted. We’ll ask you to walk us through your code and discuss the key decisions you made—such as how you handled streaming, how you structured the app, and what trade-offs or optimizations you considered.

This discussion will help us understand your thought process, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in a real-world production environment.

Step 3: Founder Chat (30 Minutes)

The final step is a 30-minute chat with the founders. This is a mutual-fit conversation for us to learn more about your background, career goals, and what motivates you. We'll discuss your interest in the health tech space and your desire to work in a fast-paced, high-ownership startup environment.

This is also your best opportunity to ask us anything—about our mission, company culture, product vision, or the path from contract to full-time.
